On the southern Caribbean island of Bonaire — part of the Dutch ABC islands just north of Venezuela and safely outside the hurricane belt — Buddy Dive Resort has built its reputation on the island’s legendary “drive-and-dive” freedom. Guests load their own tanks into a pickup truck at the resort’s unique two-lane drive-thru air and nitrox filling station and set off to explore dozens of protected shore sites within Bonaire National Marine Park, or head out on one of six custom dive boats for guided reef and wall dives. Buddy’s Reef, the resort’s own house reef, sits just steps from the water and shelters sponges, corals, and coral nurseries tended by Reef Renewal Bonaire. Accommodations range from cozy studios to spacious one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments with full kitchens, air conditioning, and ocean or garden views, complemented by two swimming pools and two restaurants on site. Diving is excellent nearly year-round thanks to Bonaire’s remarkably stable conditions: water temperatures generally run from the high 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit, air temperatures hover in the mid-80s by day, and visibility routinely exceeds 100 feet. December through April marks the traditional peak season, while May through September often brings the calmest seas and clearest water of all, making Buddy Dive a rewarding destination for divers no matter when they book their trip.
